Charles the second

Hearing Luqui, our 'guard' canine, barking continuously, I go to the back door and catch the glimpse of something tear across the backyard. "OMG not again!! HUB DO something!!!!"

Lying on the couch, the man of my life comes to the rescue with as much life as a bear after hibernation...'WHAT is your problem today?'

Turning from the window I explain...

"Another Iguana is out there...AGAIN!"
Taking our 'guard' canine, Hub opens the door and Luqui makes a made dash for the back corner, barking as she defends her territory.

Getting down with Luqui, they turn on the flashlight and look into the plants...'Yup. It's another one!'

I take our 'guard' canine back into the house, leaving her barking and whining like a 3 year old on Christmas morning.

'So, do you want it in the front yard with Charlie?'

Charlie is our resident Iguana who's been recuperating for the last 2 months.

"No. They're territorial" I warn him.

'Then don't just stand there. Help me get it out of the garage."

Easier said than done. As we work chasing the little bugger from one end of the garage to the other, for almost an hour Luqui's in the house whining and hollering like an enthusiastic cheerleader.

And so, Charles the second takes up residence in the garage, Hubs' domain, for 2 days after which Hub declares...'This isn't a damn Iguana hotel. It's outta here today!'

Moving more stuff off shelves Hub gently pokes Charles the second with one of his broom handles hoping to move the him. No luck...infact the Iguana is now fighting with Hub...biting down on the broom and not letting go.

I hear him arguing with Charles the second...'I'm not playing with you...now LET...IT...GO...DAMN IT!'

After 10 minutes he gets his stick back and we move everything in the garage making a clear path to the door and to the street...and we wait....wait for 2 hrs.

"That's it!" Hub yells as we move the rest of the shelving and start the chase all over again. Charlie2 runs around everything that has been moved...over..under...and finally staking claim under the one shelf we didn't empty.

After another 2 hours and Hub pulls out the expensive work gloves...

As I life the empty shelving unit he grabs hold of the Iguanas' tail...lifting him up and out of the garage...hissing and spitting the whole time (the Iguana not Hub.)

We watch as Charlie the second grabs one of Hubs expensive leather gloves and sinks his razor sharp teeth into it and wouldn't let go.

This is when I see Hubs people skills hit a high note...
'Let go of it you lil' bugger!! I'm helping you get back to the wild!!!'

Finally the glove drops and we watch Charles the second run up the road and then back down to our garage trying desperately to get back in.

I watch in delight as Hub announces...'the hotel is officially closed!' and carefully we direct Charles the second back into the bushes.

(Note: No Iguanas were hurt during this event.)

Wild life in the house

Hub has a way of watching MY tv programs these days...

and then wakes up when one of his shows come on.

This particular night I see something fly through the air and land behind the television.

"What the hell was that???"

Calmly Hub puts the tv on pause and immediately grabs for the flyswatter.

"Doin' old school? No electrocution swatting device tonight?"

Watching him move around the tv I hear...'The electric swatter isn't working. Get me the flashlight.'

Handing him the light I ask..."So WHAT is it?"

'Grasshopper.'

"This is no time to quote the Kung Fu series smart ass."

'Nooooo...it's a real grasshopper.'

I watch as Hub moves around the screen..behind the screen..to the other side of the screen...chasing the bug.

'Damn it! It went down the hole with all the wires. Grab a plastic container, maybe something oblong.'

"You do know it won't just walk into a container, right? How 'bout a paper towel first?"

I watch as my husband of 40+ years repeatedly plays tag with the biggest grasshopper ever. "Will you stop playing with the damn thing and just grab it!"

Making one final leap I hear him...'Gotcha ya lil' bugger!'

"My hero!!!"

"Now get the damn thing outside and don't be opening the paper towel to check for it! Just get it out!!"

Holding the paper towel he heads for the door.

"You're not going to kill it, are you?"

'No Mam...No killing here today. I repatriated it, back into the world, so it will have a fair chance of returning!'

Dog

After four German Shepherds and a multitude of cats over the years, Hub put his foot down...‘no more pets!’

Of course since then we have had 4 Iguanas, but they don't count since they seemed to only arrive in my backyard to give birth and then leave, so I was set on a petless home...

and geckos don’t count, they’re always around just eating bugs.

So, when Hub suggested inheriting a 5 yr old German Shepherd I have to say I didn’t take him seriously.

That was, until Luqui (who names a female Lou-key) started coming to our casa for daily visits.

‘Isn’t she great?’ said Hub as he walked her into the yard.

“Uh huh”

‘And trained expertly!’

“Uh huh”

‘And just look at that face!!!’

“And she is here, why?”

‘Well, she has to get to know us to see if she wants to live here.’

I look at him and ask...“You do remember Duke, George, Tilley and you’re all time favourite, Saint Dugan?”

‘Exactly! Besides, she will keep you company when I’m not here, you know, protection.’

“Did you say you’re going someplace?” I asked with excited hope.

‘I could.’

And so, Luqui has now moved in and I’m thrilled to be able to talk to someone, other than Hub all day.

And the ritual has started...4.45am, I hear Luqui start to whine next to the bed.

Hub continues to sleep soundly as I get up, wash, dress and proceed downstairs with dog close behind excited to do her business.

An hour and a half later, after waiting patiently, Luqui decides it’s time for sleeping beauty to get moving.

She immediately races up the stairs and pushes the door open and proceeds to set her wet nose on the side of the bed.

Not getting a response, Luqui starts to whine and then breaths in and out next to his face.

A short time later Hub staggers down the stairs to find Luqui waiting patiently.

Giving them words of encouragement, I open the door and wave them off...“Have a good morning Sunshine and a lovely walk...You too Hub!”

I lean against the wall and see the sun start to poke it’s head into the sky...watching a man and his dog walk slowly into the sunrise.
