Control switch

Hub had to spend a few days in one of our new hospitals for tests. I say hospital but it's really more like a luxury hotel!!

Calling from his 'suite' he tells me...

'Make sure you fill up with gas before you pick me up.'

"Uh huhhhh." As I wait for further instructions.

'And don't forget to check the tires.'

"Okayyyy, now go away so I can pick you up!"

Grabbing my shopping list I head down to our gas station, where filling up is like a blast from the past...full service. It's here that the attendant spots a nail in my front tire.

Of course Hub decides to call at this point..."What the hell? Do you have like cameras on me???"

'What can I say...I'm bored out of his mind.'

So I tell him the situation..."We found a nail in the tire, so I'll be late picking you up."

This news really gets him pumped...giving him something to do...'Ok!! Now here's what you have to do...make sure you take it over to the service depot across...'

"yeah, yeah, yeahhh...I know."

Finishing up my shopping I head over to the tire repair location and within 15 minutes and less than 5 bucks later I'm on my way out to pickup Hub, only to discover he's gone out to another location, by ambulance, for a particular test.

Looking around the room and not wanting to waste the amenities, I relax in the oversized rocker/recliner, lean back and listen to the music channel.

Shortly the door opens and I hear Hub telling the porter how to drive the gurney more efficiently.

'So where were you?' he asks as he tries to get off the gurney gracefully.

"Whatcha talking about?"

'Well, we made a stop at the tire shop before the tests and you weren't there.'

"You mean you had the ambulance stop in and check that I was doing it right? You do know you're insane right!!!"

'Hey it was on the way..and the boys said it was no big deal.'

Calmly I thank the porters...close the door..and walk over to the bed...take Hub by the scruff of the neck and ask...
"How many ways can I say this? Let go of the damn switch you control freak!!!!"

Cold vs. Flu

'Linda I'm dying here!'
Hub has a cold..

'Feel my forehead...And when you're out can you pick me up some kleenex...don't forget the Halls...'

Ok, so it may have been more than a cold...I know, because I got it 2 weeks later when Hub was out on his sailboat voyage.

A week later Hub sees me heading for the door and asks...'So, where you going?'

"Hey I feel better and I need to see if there are actually people out there beyond these walls."

Waving goodbye I hear him sneezing as I shut the door. Guess who's sick again.

It lasts about 10 days. I know Hub's feeling better as I see he's showered, getting ready to go out. As he passes the couch I start to ask..."feel me..."

'WhoOoO hooOOO baby!'

Grabbing his hand I ask..."Do I have a temperature?"

Running over the the sink he proceeds to wash his hands violently. 'Don't touch any of the remote controls! And for gawd sake don't touch any part of me, you human incubator of disease!!'

Yup it's happened again...so I do what all women know works...

leave us alone and sleep.

After a few days I know Hub is getting sick again. I hear him even before I  see him, as he tries to breath.

Since he's sick now, and I'm on day four of my 'cold', I drag myself out and change the beds...do the laundry and make some homemade chicken soup.

I put out the vitamins...nose spray
...Kleenex...hot lemonade drinks...oil of oregano drops...

So it's been a long 2 months of this virus going back and forth between us...and we've had it! We're still not breathing on each other but we've decided...we can move and somewhat breath normally...so it's time.

Time to change up the cold remedies...

Cocktails!!

Compassion & Patience???

Well, it's that time of year again.....

'Linda!! I nee...I needdd...' And the whining has begun.

You see, Hub's sick.

'Sick??? Hey, I'm dying here woman! Where's the Kleenex????'

He's got a cold.

I recall my high school counsellor suggesting that I should become a nurse. Ok, she was a professional, so she must know what she saying, right?

I remember going home and telling my mother..."the school thinks I should go into nursing."

Her response was....

Walking up two flights of stairs I drop off the kleenex box to the patient, who is now searching for his ear muffs, and I hear...'these aren't the soft ones.'

Making my way back downstairs to look for the 'soft kleenex' I think about our son. He's 36 now and still breathing, so I guess I did something right, like using common sense. My Mother was a firm believer...'If you don't have anything broken...if you aren't bleeding... and there's no death certificate, you get your ass out of bed, before I do call the doctor!'

I hear 'the patient' sneezing and coughing from up the stairs...'Lindaaaa...have you seen my Halls cough drops?'

Walking back up two flights and I hand him a half opened package.“Maybe you should actually try lying down and resting. You know, give me...nooo give you some quiet time.”

It's at that point Hub jumps off the couch and runs to the wall, wearing ear muffs and turns off the ceiling fan...'My gawd woman!!! Are you trying to kill me with that hurricane wind?'

It's then that I think of my daughter-in-law and all the other wonderful nurses I have worked with over the years...each one smart and professional, working with hundreds and thousands of patients over the years...day in and day out.
How the hell did they do it?????

I hear the patient wheezing upstairs... 'Lindaaaaa...you know a little compassion would help here!!!!!'

Yes, each one of those nurses are professional and compassionate angels.
I walk over to the freezer...drop two cubes into a glass, fill it with my idea of compassion and patience... and raise my glass to each and every one of them!!!!
God Bless You!
